COURSES IN THE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IN MINISTRY AND STUDIES IN THE LIFE OF JESUS
L-101 THE INFANCY OF JESUS
An analysis of the life of Jesus is introduced through five stages: childhood, the year of preparation, the year of popularity, the year of passion, and the resurrected life. Jesus’ ministry is placed within the context of first-century Palestine, and the concept of the Kingdom of God, as well as the doctrine of Christ (Christology), is introduced. The doctrinal concepts of certain sects are also explored. The evangelism program “Bringing My World to Christ” is presented and proposed as a term-long experiment. The project consists of studying the Evangelical Covenant Church’s affirmation, “The Centrality of the Word of God.”
L-104 THE YEAR OF PASSION
The doctrine of humanity is examined, addressing topics such as sin, death, salvation, human relationships, sex, and marriage. Various types of authority in matters of faith—tradition, reason, and revelation—are critically considered. An overview of the Old Testament is provided to establish its historical context. The intertestamental period and the formation of the Roman Empire are also briefly explored. The project is to study the Evangelical Covenant Church’s affirmation, “The Church as a Community of Believers.”
L-102 THE YEAR OF PREPARATION
L-103 THE YEAR OF POPULARITY
A comparison of the Synoptic Gospels and John is introduced. John the Baptist’s preaching is highlighted as an introduction to the themes of repentance and its fruits. The historical context of Jesus’ ministry is explored, including the priests, Pharisees, Sadducees, and the Sanhedrin. Through the study of Jesus’ temptation, issues such as materialism, violence, vanity, and other contemporary concerns are examined. The project is to study the Evangelical Covenant Church’s affirmation, “The Necessity of the New Birth.”
ORIENTACION DEL PACTO
Through the study of the Lord’s Prayer, personal and corporate prayer are explored. Various methods of evangelism, as well as the steps and conditions for church planting, are examined. The study of the Sermon on the Mount introduces methods of Bible study. Students are guided in the effective use of concordances, Bible dictionaries, commentaries, and other reference materials. The project is to study the Evangelical Covenant Church’s affirmation, “A Commitment to the Holistic Vision of the Church.”
L-105 THE FINAL WEEK
Jerusalem in the time of Jesus is presented, including its geography, the Temple, the Passover festival, and other aspects of the city and its setting. The events and teachings of our Lord’s final week are examined, including the Last Supper and the crucifixion. Christ is studied as Prophet, Priest, and King. A comparative study of Jesus’ life in the four Gospels is also conducted. The project is to study the Evangelical Covenant Church’s affirmation, “A Conscious Dependence on the Holy Spirit.”
L-106 THE RESURRECTED LIFE
ORIENTACION DEL PACTO
The resurrection, ascension, and Great Commission are studied. The way the church carried out this mandate, according to the Book of Acts, is examined. Paul’s three missionary journeys are studied. The doctrine of the Holy Spirit and the pastoral work of the church throughout the centuries are also considered. The project is to study the Evangelical Covenant Church’s affirmation, “The Reality of Freedom in Christ.”
